CHAPTER SEVEN

The Good with the Bad

Ka-ching!

The sound of the cash register was an unnecessary punctuation mark to the day that Tiffany was having. Farah had been exceedingly kind today, offering Tiffany to man the cash register because she looked too tired and tightly wound up to be a believable sales rep.

Tiffany smiled at the customer as she handed her the change and sales receipt then let her smile fall and leaned her elbows on the desk. Living with her father was exhausting. He drained her emotionally, used her as a crutch for his drinking problems and refused to face his own hand in the accident that had led to her mother’s coma.

She stifled a yawn and pulled her mouth into a lopsided grin as another customer approached with a basket full of merchandise. Tiffany was so busy ringing up her purchases that she didn’t notice the two police officers approach Farah. She didn’t see Farah talking to them urgently and pointing at her.

“Excuse me miss,” said one of the officers, a bulky bald man with a bulbous nose and open pores. “I’m going to have to ask you to come with us.”

“What’s happened?” Tiffany panicked. “Is it my mom? Is it dad? Is he in trouble?”

“Calm down, ma’am,” the other officer, a young Hispanic man with dark hair and a pleasant smile held up a hand. “It’s not your parents. We’ve been informed of a theft, money going missing from the cash register over the past few weeks.”

Tiffany stared, uncomprehending.

“Your manager says you handle the register,” the bald officer pointed a thumb over his shoulder to where Farah was standing in triumph. “That you have the most access to it.”

“There must be some mistake,” Tiffany said as calmly as she could manage. “This is the first time in months that I’ve been allowed anywhere near the cash register. You can check CCTV footage!”

“And we will,” the young man said. “But right now we’d like you to come with us please.”

“But I haven’t done anything,” Tiffany protested blanching when the bald man’s hand unbuttoned his gun holster, his hand resting on the handle ready to draw at a moment’s notice. Tiffany’s hands automatically shot up in surrender. “Okay, I’ll go.”

The young man stepped aside, allowing her the decency of walking out of the store without being handcuffed. Farah’s smile was gloating as she swiped a finger across her throat and Tiffany knew Farah finally had the flimsy grounds she needed to fire her. Sephora would never associate with anyone even feet from something that stank of criminal activity and Tiffany had brought police inside the store. They would never risk hiring someone like that again.

Tiffany tried hard not to cry in the back of the police car but the dead-eyed stare the bald police officer gave her scared her to her core. She could still see, in her mind’s eye, the way his hand had immediately gone for his gun at the first sign of agitation from Tiffany. That officer was convinced she was dangerous even without checking the facts.
